Chesterfield Golf Studio golf simulator in Chesterfield

Chesterfield Golf Club has put real investment into its indoor studio, and the good news is that you do not need to be a member to use it. Set at the club on Matlock Road in Walton, the studio has two TrackMan bays in a warm, dry room, which is very welcome on a grey Derbyshire afternoon.

The library of more than 230 courses means you can take on the likes of St Andrews, Royal Troon or Wentworth, while TrackMan reports a wealth of data on every shot. Because this is a golf club rather than a bar, it leans towards improvement as much as fun. The club's professionals use the studio for lessons, picking apart a slice or a hook with the numbers in front of you, and the pro shop team offers club and ball fitting there too.

Pricing for non-members is simple: £30 an hour, or £15 for half an hour, booked in 30-minute blocks between 8am and 9pm. Up to four can share a studio, and the club estimates an 18-hole round takes around an hour for one player and up to three and a half hours for a four-ball. Drinks and sharing platters can be enjoyed alongside.

A few house rules are worth knowing. You bring your own clubs and clean, new balls, spiked shoes are not allowed though trainers are fine, and left-handed golfers need to book Studio 1. Cancellations need 24 hours' notice.

Members can join regular studio tournaments, and anyone using TrackMan can enter its global online events, but there is no public league advertised at present.
